Tangfastic shirt
June 28, 2012
It's no secret that I'm a fan of the musical group Scissor Sisters. I've seen them more than a few times in concert. For an upcoming concert at a small venue in Toronto, I wanted to do something creative that might catch their eye. The easy answer was a T-shirt, but what type of design should it have? It had to be something easily visible and readable from the stage. I played around briefly with the idea of having some sort of artistic drawing of all four members of the group, but didn't think that was unique enough, or easy to spot from stage. Maybe just focus on one member? I thought about making some sort of robot design referencing vocalist Ana Matronic, like a robot version of her. It was an interesting idea, but might take too long to produce.
Finally, I decided that a design based around the always cool and collected bass guitarist, BabyDaddy, and his fairly unique Twitter username TangfasticMan, would work perfectly. In only a day, I had created the design based on the logo of the orange-flavored, powder-based drink Tang, and had the shirt printed through Spreadshirt.com.
Right as they were coming back out for the encore, I knew it was my last chance for them to see the shirt, so I took off my shirt to hold up (because everyone in Toronto is apparently taller than me). BabyDaddy saw it, smiled, and gave me a thumbs up. Then Ana Matronic said she wanted it, and had me come up to the front row to give it to her. She said that their crew member would take me to get a free tour shirt after the show, if I'd give it to them. To describe to the crew member who I was, Ana called me "the cute naked guy with the beard." Later, BabyDaddy tweeted the pic of me in the shirt and said it was a new favorite.
Needless to say, it was an awesome night.
